Programme description

Sustainable management of resources in the High North is of high importance and in the light of recent events, focus on cooperation between Russia and Norway in exploring and exploiting these resources will be paramount. In light of discovered petroleum resources in the High North the area has attracted much political and commercial attention, and future success relies heavily on how enterprises, authorities, NGO’s, research and education institutions collectively handle challenges that are specific to this pristine region. Energy production in the High North has to satisfy a number of often conflicting and complicated criteria’s, such as economical profitability, technological reliability and environmental/societal friendliness.

Sustainability can be defined in different ways, one important perspective is the “intergenerational equity” and that any strategic and operational actions of the organization are considered in the light of not only the economic, but also the environmental and social impact. The High North is rich in natural resources, especially fish and oil & gas and development depends on these resources. However, the ecosystem is vulnerable and, some have argued that high petroleum activity in this area may impact the major fishing stocks of Artic regions. The debate about future exploration and exploitation attracts attention from many stakeholders such as oil companies, fisheries, indigenous population, the tourism industry, policy makers and NGO’s. The development of a master program focusing on sustainable business operations in the High North will contribute to improved knowledge and better ways to handle potential conflicts, keep them from escalating and initiate processes that supports dialogue and peaceful co-existence for the common good.

A joint-degree program with Russian and Norwegian students

This program will be a joint-degree program based on the ideas established in the Bologna declaration. The program will be developed in the cooperation with following partner institutions in Russia:

Arkhangelsk State Technical University (ASTU)

Baltic State Technical University (BSTU)

Murmansk State Technical University (MSTU)

Tumen State University (TSU)

Ukhta State Technical University (USTU)

BSTU will be a program coordinator from the Russian side, responsible particularly for the practical matters of cooperation within the program.

The student exchange will be an essential component of the program, and the candidates accepted for the admission will spend one semester abroad, i.e. Bodø students in Russia and Russian students from partner universities in Norway. To strengthen the international atmosphere of the program and networking, the students will study together during the exchange year, i.e. during the second semester students will gather in Bodø, and the third semester will be spent in Russia, at different Russian universities.

Programme structure

The program consists of 4 semesters, where the 2nd and 3rd semesters represent the exchange year. During the first semester, students enrolled in the program will follow mandatory courses at their “home” institutions. During the second semester students from Russian universities will travel to Bodø, and together with Norwegian students, study specialization courses in addition to a course on research methods. In the third semester both Norwegian and Russian students will be traveling to Russian universities to take number of elective courses. During the fourth and final semester students will be at their “home” institutions, working on their master thesis.

The first semester will focus on modern business administration theory and practice, with an emphasis on providing the student with an understanding of the subject area’s eclectic nature; develop proficiency in constructive use of theory, while also developing an active attitude towards business administration processes. There will also be an introduction to relevant philosophical, ethical and environmental themes. This semester will be shared with students at other Master programs at HHB.

Evaluation

The program is evaluated annually based on feedback from the students, both through a continuous dialogue during the term and through a web based questionnaire at the end of each term.
